Thrown out to sea!

In Brazil, when a newborn's umbilical cord drops off the parents hold on to it. This is so that later they can either bury it in the ground or throw it out to sea. I'm not sure where this tradition comes from but Paulo, Eloy and I went down to Barceloneta the other week to throw Eloy's little bit of dried up skin into the Mediteranian Sea. Paulo made a beautiful speech and I just tried my best to get my part of the cord to land in the water and not blow back into my face. I hope that, just as Paulo said, Eloy grows up to be a person who faces the unknown without fear.
